FTC Claims Victory on SPAM - Fewer Complaints?

Sometimes it is just amazing reading the propaganda put out by government regulatory agencies. Often you just want to say; they are full of beans. Well, I cannot believe what I just read, it seems the FTC is now claiming victory on SPAM because more complaints are coming in from Identity Theft and gasoline price gouging and temporarily the SPAM has gone down to third place? If that is not the most ridiculous cop-out or bunch of malarkey that I have ever heard I do not know what is.

Just because US Citizens have gotten use to the abusive SPAM and the FTC has been getting fewer complaints they are calling it a victory. There is no victory, all that we have here is complete Public Relation Propaganda and it makes me sick (opinion). I still get plenty of SPAM as my SPAM filter blocks it, but we are all still paying in higher band-width costs. In fact, I have to go through my SPAM box every once in a while to insure that no real emails got lost in it?

SPAM has gone up 3000% since the FTC took control of the job to fight it. It is probably the worst showing ever in the history of mankind of any regulatory agency. The Mexican Government has been doing a better job against the prolific drug cartel than the Federal Trade Commission against SPAM. I just have to ask, since I am an expert in studying the FTC propaganda machine, abuse of power and utter incompetence: are the American People actually believing this Victory on SPAM comment. Because when I read about this one someone's Blog recently, I was appalled.

Web Filtering

Web filtering is the prevention of access to offensive or malicious sites.

Did you know 25% of the total search engine requests are porn related? And that 70% of the access to porn related sites is during work hours? Or how about that 30 - 40% of employee's web activity is not work associated? These are the facts that many employers are failing to do anything about.

Access to malicious sites leaves your companies network open to security threats that may include the download of harmful software and the exploit of vulnerabilities. As a company you have the responsibility of making sure your network doesn't have any security threats by stopping admission to certain sites.

Not only does restricting the entry to certain sites stop your network from becoming vulnerable to security threats it also means that your employees are productive during working hours instead of wasting time browsing sites that they shouldn't be on. Web filtering allows you to take control, you decide what the computers in your network can access and what they can't, dependent on what your company is about and what its needs are, making it a very flexible piece of software.

Web filtering software is not only for use in a company, office environment but is also available for use on home computers in the cases of parents who want to control the content that their children can gain access to on the computer. This also applies to schools who want to stop children gaining access to sites that could not only damage the computer network but that could also put the children in danger of, for example, pedophiles.

So would it bother you if your company monitored or filtered your web access? To some the idea of Web Filtering is like taking away pens to prevent doodling. Web Filtering in the eyes of employers is a way of monitoring their employees without directly saying that they are doing so. Employers are given complete peace of mind benefits from using Web Filtering software on computer networks. The networks are protected from not only the basic web threats but also from inappropriate or illegal web content and reduces the risk of illegal content entering.

As a company money is an obvious issue and another reason why many companies decide to use a Web Filtering service. This is because by restricting the amount of sites employees have access to you are reducing the bandwidth that is being used, saving you money

The amount of time spent browsing the internet continues to rise, which makes it harder to monitor and regulate all the sites. Most web filtering checks the sites you are trying to gain access to against a list of sites that are restricted, however you may struggle with this as the volume of new sites continues to grow.

Web filtering in the workplace puts you in control of what your employees can gain access to; you are controlling their use of the internet, which makes them less likely to try and get onto non work related sites, meaning they will be more productive.

How To Get Rid Of Spam Emails

In February 2007, there were 90 billion spams sent per day and this number is increasing everyday. What is a spam email? Spam email is a bulk email or junk email and the sender sent it to numerous recipients without their permission.

I think many of us get this type of email everyday. It's really annoying and no one likes it and deleting it doesn't mean that we have solved the problem. But, there are ways on how you can get rid of spam and prevent it from coming to your email inbox.

1. Use Fake Email Address

There are many temporary email address services available on the Internet, what you should do is just Google it and you'll find a lot of website offering temporary email services. So, if you want to give away your email address for only temporary purpose, I suggest you to use the temporary email address service.

The temporary email address sometimes only available for only 5 minutes before it cannot be used and during that time you can use that email address for any purpose that you like. Therefore you will not reveal your 'real' email address. Only reveal your 'real' email address to someone that you trust.

2. The Unsubscribe Link

If there is an unsubscribe link inside that email, don't click it. I've done this before and the spam emails keep coming, even more than before. If you click the unsubscribe link, they will mark your email as responsive because you've actually read it, therefore they can sell your email address at a higher price.

3. Use Email Filtering Software

Email filtering software can help to protect your email from spam. If you're serious about fighting spam, I suggest you to buy spam blocker software.

4. Type Your Email Differently.

If you have to reveal your email to a friend in a website, I suggest you to type it differently. Instead of writing abcd@xyz.com, type it as abcd [at] xyz.com. It can help you dealing with spam bots and spam spiders. Even though real people will immediately know your email address, but it will give some trouble to the spam bots or spam spider.

Using reCAPTCHA To Stop Comment Spam

Comment spam is more than a jolly nuisance. It is also costly for business to have to deal with it.

But today I installed an effective solution which is not only free (that magic word), it's also easy to set up. And 'easy' is, of course, the other magic word that we all love so much.

First I set up a new WordPress blog at Harmedia.com - and that was as easy as falling off a log because I used Fantastico which is built into CPanel webhosting.

Just now I am finishing things off with a few extra plugins. Including reCAPTCHA which is available free. And as I mentioned, it is so easy to install.

Step 1. You download it from recaptcha.net and unzip the file.

2. You upload the two .php files to your Wordpress plugins folder.

3. Then you go to your Plugins page and activate reCAPTCHA by clicking it. The new page reminds you to enter the 2 big long numbers you got when you registered at recaptcha.net (called public and private keys and they are unique to this one site of yours). That's it. You're all set.

WHY I LIKE reCAPTCHA

- It's free.

- It works.

- There is no messing around with copying code into your blog template.

- No permissions to change. (CHMOD isn't hard once you know what you're doing but the learning curve before that has befuddled many a beginner, I'd say.)

- A feel-good bonus is the fact that you're helping the Internet Archive to improve the accuracy of its Optical Character Recognition software.

How so? Because the words shown come directly from old books that are being digitized. Words that the OCR software cannot read are fed into captchas and if multiple users like you and me all render it the same way then that result is entered into the OCR memory.

So not only does your blog get protected from robot spam, your commenters are helping old books get digitized correctly.

Are you using captchas to protect your blog from comment spam yet? It's free and it's easy. What are you waiting for?

By the way, CAPTCHA stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart", although ironically the recaptcha.net site does not include the word Public in its explanation of the term. So.. would that make it a CATCHA? - without the P.

Just kidding!

The CAN-SPAM Act - Practice Proper E-mail Conduct

Many of humanity's greatest inventions come with a price. The automobile, created with noble intentions; i.e; fast and efficient transport across great distances for the masses, introduced side effects like traffic congestion, environmental degradation, and urban sprawl. Similarly, electronic mail communication - while revolutionizing letter writing and commerce - comes with an undesirable side effect that threatens its long-term viability and credibility. Namely, unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE) commonly referred to as spam.

To regulate business e-mails and combat spam, the United States government passed the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act in 2003. Although other countries have followed suit with similar legislation, the CAN-SPAM Act serves as a common reference point for online marketers throughout the world.

The law sets out four major requirements for people engaging in e-mail marketing and electronic commerce in general:

Prohibit the sending of false or misleading header information: Your e-mail's "From", "To", and path information must properly identify you as the e-mail communication's source. Ban deceptive "Subject" lines: The subject line must not mislead the e-mail receiver about its content. Provide recipients with a clear opt-out option: Senders must provide a return e-mail address or an automated method to opt out of future messages, and any such requests must be honored within ten (10) business days. Identify commercial correspondence as advertising, and include the sender's valid physical postal address.

Reputable third party autoresponder services strictly adhere to the CAN-SPAM Act, and provide resources and support to ensure that you comply with its provisions. Given that the burden of proof rests with e-mail marketers, the performance of autoresponder software - especially free software - should be monitored to ensure that the above four criteria are met.

In most cases, your common sense and ethical business conduct should guarantee that you never run afoul of CAN-SPAM rules. Regardless, don't be intimidated by legalities; if you face spamming accusations, take all necessary steps to protect yourself, including dropping troublesome subscribers from your list. Most e-mail delivery services enforce a double opt-in requirement for prospects, so you should be protected in most cases.

With great power comes great responsibility. Even casual requests for information can become headaches, so funnel online contacts into your opt-in forms. Similarly, customer purchases do not give you carte blanche to add people to your contact list. Remember to include a check box or equivalent in the order form to obtain explicit permission for follow-ups.

For more details about how the CAN-SPAM Act affects your electronic commerce, please visit the Federal Trade Commission website.

Cut Down on Spam Mail

Spam mail is a plague that seems to be getting worse and worse everyday. A friend of mine recently told me that he was getting 700-900 spam emails a day. He was spending all his time reading and deleting spam.

Here is what I told him to help out the situation.

Throw Away Email Address: Create an email address using Hotmail or Yahoo Free web mail. Every time you sign up online for something like a forum or free trial, use this throw away address. Keep your main email address for more important things. Bulk Filters: Setup your bulk filters on your email client program properly. I have mine setup so that anything with the word BULK in the subject line automatically gets put into the delete folder. You still have to scan through your delete folder to make sure that a legitimate email wasn't placed in there. Remove Email Address: If you have a website, be careful about putting your email address on the contact page. Spammers have robot programs that spider the web looking for and collecting email address's from a website like yours. You can use a secure web form for your contact page or if you must put your email address on your site, use a graphic representation of your email address. This will defeat the spam robot and keep it from getting your email address. Catchall Email Address's: When you setup your website, don't use "catchall" email addresses. Only use the ones that you plan to use. Spammers will send out emails to websites that they find to all the obvious ones. (ie: info, sales, admin, help..etc) Protected Email Forms: Don't be part of the problem. Spammers will look for unprotected email forms and try to exploit them to send out their spam mail. Make sure your website web forms are secure and not vulnerable to spam exploits. Boycott Spammers: The reason that there is so much spam email is that it works. The spammers send out millions of emails and some people end up going to the spammer's websites and purchasing product or services. I make it a point to NEVER buy anything from a company that spam's. If everybody did the same, the problem would go away. Privacy Policy: Always check a website's privacy policy before you submit your e-mail address to see whether or not the give or sell customer information to others. Don't do business with anybody that helps the spammers. Virus and Trojans: Check your computer for virus's and Trojans that can make your computer into a mindless zombie spam emailer. Hackers will put these programs onto your computer and use it to send out thousand of emails without your knowledge. After a while your ISP will contact you and probably accuse you of being a spammer. Make sure that you run your Virus and Trojan detection software once per week. Report the Spammer: Make sure you forward your unwanted spam to uce@ftc.gov The federal government is creating a database and going after the worst offenders. You may not eliminate spam altogether but if you follow some or all of my tips, you can reduce it. After following all my advice, my friend was able to cut his spam down to 20-30 per day. This is way better than before.

Why is Spam Causing Such a Problem on the Internet?

Out of all the emails we receive it is estimated that 60% of them are spam emails. So is there a cure to stop the spam permanently? Unfortunately there is no cure at the moment and only time will tell if there is ever going to be one. As the spam filters keep coming the spammers are getting cleverer, finding more and more ways to fill our inboxes with junk mail.

As the internet is growing and more of us are getting email accounts the spam is growing with it. The situation is getting worse rather than better. If your business/company has a website it is a great marketing tool as you can showcase your products and or services to more people who you normally wouldn't be able to without a website. Many businesses that have a website need to have their email address on the site so that customers can get in touch with them, however this leaves them open to spam.

In order for your business to run efficiently without having to spend hours deleting spam emails you need to invest in a spam filter. Spam filters work by scanning email messages for keywords that are often used by spammers; however this can sometimes end up blocking emails from family, friends or clients.

Have you ever broken down the hours of the working day? When you really think about it an eight hour working day doesn't mean that those eight hours are going to be spent working. In reality about 6 of those hours amount to actual work that is done. One hour is spent on a lunch break and another hour is dedicated to toilet breaks, small talk, making drinks and generally sorting things out between pieces of work. However if your business/company lacks a decent spam filter you could end up with another hour being taken up by sorting through unwanted emails to find emails from your clients, friends and family. That means getting rid of spam could take up to five hours a week, 20 hours a month which is 240 hours a year.

If you are anti spam then the way the best way to handle it is to use good anti-spam software or Spam Filter. All of your emails are sent through a series of intelligent filters to ensure you only receive the emails you want and need.

A good spam filter only costs between £30 and £50 which, when you think about all of the money you lose through loss of production, will actually save you money in the long run.

Spam messages can contain hidden viruses and Trojans, which can make your systems crash, causing lost data and down-time due to servers being overloaded with data in the form of spam.

Spam filters block 99% of spam emails as well as viruses and Trojans that can come with them. They make your computer and business network safe, giving you complete peace of mind and allowing you to get on with your work, which is what matters.
